Brompton Cemetery: A Place of Tranquility

After a very busy week and a tough deadline this morning, I decided that for this week's post I would hop on a Santander bike (aka Barclays bike, aka Boris bike) and cycle to my favourite place in the city; Brompton Cemetery.

To many it might seem odd that of all of the exciting attractions and places in London, that my favourite place in the city is one of its cemeteries. For me, however, Brompton Cemetery really is the perfect spot. It is a place of stillness and serenity, perfect for escaping the relentless momentum of the city. And on a sunny day like today I was certainly not the only one to appreciate the tranquility of the cemetery; the cemetery was filled with runners, cyclists, dog walkers, sun bathers and artists.

Close to the cemetery's central domed chapel, in the central section, the cemetery has colonnades. Beneath the colonnades there are catacombs (burial chambers), for which there are stairs down to their entrance and are really interesting.

Now i'll admit that even for me these can feel a little spooky, but in my opinion well worth a peek!

Taking a photo through the small slats in the gate with such little light inside and no tripod was a challenge but for those of you who like to see everything I tried my best

Whilst it might sometimes feel a little spooky at times, Brompton Cemetery also plays host to a lot of natural beauty and charming architecture

As always, London gave me more than I bargained for today when visiting the cemetery; whilst snapping some pictures of some headstones I heard a strange noise behind me that caught my attention and had me turn around. Unbelievably, behind me there was a man walking down the central avenue with two blue parrots!

For a moment I could not believe my eyes and stood gawping, then I had a carpe diem moment and took off down the central avenue after him hoping to get some better pictures of his parrots. Then, suddenly I heard the noise of horse's hooves trotting and a horse-drawn hearse pulled out in front of me, it genuinely felt like I had stepped in a time machine.

Once the horses had trotted off I continued walking up the central avenue until I caught up with the gentleman and his parrots. He was nice enough to let me take a quick couple of photos before he rushed them off to their destination

Just in case your wondering, I haven't changed the saturation of these photos at all, they really are that blue!

I then finished off taking a few more photos and headed back home to write this post for you.

I took loads of great photos today, but I think that is enough for one post. I will be posting some of the other photos I took on my social media pages throughout the week so make sure to subscribe/like/follow my pages for mid-week treats!
